Sunday Night in Springfield

Posted in Daily Musings at 11:05 pm by Kim Joy

The week has come to an end. It has been a productive week. Jewelry class was great we did closed circuit wire wrapping and made a bracelet and matching earrings along with 5 other pair earrings. I love teaching and sharing. We have one week left and it  is the Cha Cha bracelet and a Floating Pearl necklace.

I had a meeting with Tracey at the Del Ray Gallery. I have volunteered to be newsletter mailer. I needed a job athe Gallery and this one popped up. Funny thing, Tracey looked very familiar, turns out she works downstairs from my day job at NRA (National Rehabilitation Association). I am excited as now I will be part of the working members.

I went to see HAIR athe Kennedy Center on Thursday. OMG what a great show and yes they did get naked like in the original. Steel Burkhardt was my favorite actor. Had dinner before with friends at the Cafe at the Kennedy Center.

Saturday was Art Walk at the Workhouse in Lorton.  The kitchen commission was picked up, can’t wait to see the photos of them installed. A couple of my Fairfax students came to visit and pick up books for their next project. I am so lucky that I have such good students. More photos to come.

Beautiful Day today

Posted in Daily Musings at 10:53 pm by Kim Joy

It was such a beautiful day out. The dogs and I went for a walk at about 6:30am and it was chilly but great out. We did not see any other wild life. After some housework I went to the Library $5 a bag Sale, only got one the crowd was just too crazy. I had gone to the Sale on Friday and got a stack for $25, lots of  art history.

After the sale I went out to the Workhouse and made the Prison Museum a business card holder- purple, white and gold- Suffragettes colors. Planning what projects I will be working on getting ready for the holidays, I can not wait, I am going to make the Nutcracker series again and add to it, maybe the Rat King!  Once I get settled in the new studio I will have an Open House for friends so they can see the new place, though many will have been helping with the move.

I am also going to have an Open House at the house this year. Small and intimate with close friends, feel like sharing there holidays this year. It just feels like it is time to have a party, last one was Memorial Day weekend, the usual moving weekend. I love sharing my home and my family with friends and of course there is the food. Any reason to bake and make food I normally don’t make is welcome.

Another custom order done and off the list!

Posted in Daily Musings at 11:23 pm by Kim Joy

What an awesome day! It was chilly this morning and of course traffic to Old Town was jacked. Took 1/2 hour to go almost 3 blocks. I do dislike the traffic here, Try to keep positive and listen to some good upbeat music to keep a productive frame of mind but at times it is tough.

Work was good and I got a lot of honey do list done. Working through address changes and the conference CEUS as well as updates on website and eBlasts. Got to leave alittle early for an appointment.

Then off to my studio at Lorton. The weight of the world came off my shoulders when I pulled into the parking lot, I really love going out there to work.  Hard to call it work when I love it so much.

I had an order for a purple business card holder for another artist in my building. After a quick dinner with Michelle, my fiber artist neighbor, off to work. I finished the project tonight so I can cross that off the list.

Right now I have a repair and two custom orders reay for pick up. Yea!  Completed projects make me so happy and give me a great feeling. I listened to new CDs I go in the mail, Burning Bridget Cleary, two awesome fiddlers and one’s dad from PA. Check out their website www.burningbridgetcleary.com . These two girls can play and I love their music.

Tomorrow I am going to The Barns at Wolf Trap to see Battlefield Band.  You can check them out at  www.battlefieldband.co.uk .   I am so excited to see them again, saw them St. Patrick’s Day. They are a great band from Scotland. I can not wait to tell you about it tomorrow night.

Blog Triage Homework

Posted in Daily Musings at 11:40 am by Kim Joy

On Monday I signed up for Blog Triage, a 4 week course with Cynthia Morris and Alyson Stanfield to help me build a more exciting and efficient blog. Cynthia Morris’ Blog can be found at www.originalimpulse.com/blog and Alyson Stanfield’s Blog can be found at www.artbizblog.com .

I had read Alyson Stanfield’s book “I’d Rather Be in the Studio” last year and have been wanting to attend one of her workshops ever since. The Blog triage was being offered online so I thought this was a great time to take a workshop while improving  my blog.

My homework for Lesson One is to write post describing the type of people I would like to visit and read my blog. So here is goes….

Who visits my blog? Visitors to my blog are both male and female, with a wide range of ages but I imagine mainly 30 to 60 year olds. Their background is mixed, artists, students and web travelers. Where do they come from? Anywhere and everywhere, there is no boundary for my visitors and I love it when people visit from Outside the US. The interests of my visitors are stained glass, jewelry, down to earth life and just interested in what the girl next door is up to.  Are they comfortable with the blog format? I sure hope so. I try to make it fun and  informative as well easy to read.  Are they likely to comment? Well that is where I have to work, going a response from people. So far only 3 comments in over 1 year.  :(  Do I not write anything worth commenting on? Am I boring? How do I get visitors to leave comments?

What do I want to get from blogging? I would like this to be an outlet to grow myself  as a writer and artist while I share my artistic life with others, a place to let you know what is new in my studio life and some of my everyday life as they tend to blend. It would be awesome if my blog helped my artistic career and brought my art to the world in a way that is beyond imagination.

This was my first homework in years, I am not afraid to turn it in. I always feel short and to the point is better than candy coating and added fluff…. we’ll see.

See you later craftagator!

Saturday Double Classes done

Posted in Daily Musings at 10:57 pm by Kim Joy

For the past 7 weeks I have taught back to back stained glass classes on Saturdays for Fairfax Adult Ed. I am glad for the break until the next class starts up. It has been fun and I have met some wonderful people that I hope to stay in touch with. I learned from them as they learned from me. I have been so blessed to have such good students through the Fairfax County Adult Ed Program. Thank you so much students for a great session.

Worked on kitchen project, need to put came around it to finish.

Cleaned all the soldering iron tips, yes I know that sounds like I have no life but it is necessary to keep them alive for a longer time, lost one to age :( Too much build up to recover. I need to repack the class box before I store it away until the next class. I packed the jewelry bag for Arlington and Fairfax classes, love being organized for a change. Can you believe that I have supplies ready for all the classes up to the end of the year? Is this really me? What happened? I do love being able to just throw a bag in the car and go teach. Would love it if I could keep up, is it possible? Maybe it is the new leaf… we can hope.

Monday Morning Blues

Posted in Daily Musings at 10:14 pm by Kim Joy

OK after being, home for week, it was really hard to get up and go to work. I wish I could have another week to recover but that is not to be. There were lots of emails even though I checked email every day while home. And the boxes arrived from New Orleans and had to be unpacked, which means CEU paperwork.

Tonight I need to burnish purple globs for the kitchen job I am doing. I also have a bunch design ideas floating around in my head that I need to get down on paper before they leave me. I can not wait to get moved into the new studio because that means I will be able to play and experiment. So off to burnish…..

How much wood can a woodchuck chuck?

Saturday Night and its all right!

Posted in Daily Musings at 11:18 pm by Kim Joy

Well it is Saturday night and I am here with Meagan, both of us on our laptops social networking. Oh these are the days, we used to write letters and talk on the phone but not any more…. now we can just hop onto our computers and be in touch with people all over the world. It is great!

Today was stained glass class double header and then I went out to a dead van. I got a jump start from Margot and Mike- old neighbors from Hawaii. I then went on to vacuum and wash the van, it was way over due and this seemed like an ideal time to do it. I did not make it out to the Prison today, had hoped to get out there and wrap some grapes…. tomorrow.

Where oh where are purple glass globs?

Posted in Daily Musings at 10:55 pm by Kim Joy

I need 1/2″ purple grape colored globs for a custom job I am knee deep in. I looked on line and found some and ordered them with $8 shipping but when they arrived they were amethyst. What the hell? So back to the computer to look for more. I have been to every craft store, WalMart and Dollar store looking for true purple ones. OMG, what do I do? Walk over to the Glass House and talk to my peeps and cut a piece of purple glass and one hour later there are 2 dozen globs. We need to wait till tomorrow after they cool down to see if they are clear and a go.

Last night was Wacky Wednesday and the girls and I had a great time. we had missed a few Wednesdays. I repaired a piece that needed a new piece of zinc. I really love these ladies, I was so lucky to have them in my class and for them to stay around and hang out with me makes me feel great.

Home from New Orleans!

Posted in Daily Musings at 10:11 pm by Kim Joy

I left DC for New Orleans last Tuesday and got home last night. Yes it was work but it was great. The food… omg… crayfish, red fish, beignets… oh my! I had a blast. I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how to get them off the new camera.

Happy Columbus Day!

Posted in Daily Musings at 9:32 pm by Kim Joy

To think back in 1492 Columbus found America, if he saw it today he would be in shock. It was all woods, green teeming with game and the water was drinkable in all bodies of water, not so today.

I celebrated Columbus Day by grinding the custom order order that I finished cutting yesterday. I almost finished except for 5 pieces. I was going to push it but decided not to. Meagan took me to dinner at Chili’s. We went looking for grape colored globs but no luck. When I got home I went on line and found some amethyst ones and ordered them as a fall back because I need those little grapes. I will keep looking but at least there is something coming.

Tomorrow I leave for New Orleans for the week. It should be so much fun, yes I have to work 10 hour days but there is the night life and all the good food.
